Our company mascot, a.k.a. our son, Danny, is 3 years old and at the age in which Halloween is entrenched in his mind and he is giddy with anticipation. Danny was a police man for Halloween last year and he wants to be one again this year which I'm delighted with. His exuberance for holidays is enthralling. It reignites my imagination and brings back childhood feelings of excitement over simple things like dressing up in costumes and carving pumpkins. My dad was in charge of pumpkin carving when I was kid. We'd make an event of it: pick out the perfect pumpkin, bring it home, wipe it off, draw a classic Halloween pumpkin face with the gappy smile, triangle nose and eyes and scoop out the slimy stuff. My mother would bake the seeds in the oven for snacking on which we thought was neat until we realized that they were too tough to chew and didn't digest very well.
Now I run a business, a household, a family and if there's time left over, I get to maintain my hygiene, ha ha. I deeply miss the innocence of childhood, how safe and comforting it was to not have bills to worry about and investments to consider! I worry a lot about Danny's well-being and safety. Sometimes so much so that it takes my breath away for a couple of seconds. I know that feeling is unending. Growing up is painful and wonderful at the same time. Being an adult is a continual inner search for peace, positivity and fortitude. I have my faith, my family and a warm, comfortable home. These are the blessings I focus on particularly when I start to miss the innocence of my own childhood.
Watching and re-living the excitement of Halloween through Danny is wondrous. He inspires me to find what remains of my younger self and I apply that nostalgia and sentiment to the artwork for my little greeting cards. I hope- I really hope- that it will evoke memories and light into all big kids who receive them.
Whispers of Autumn are in Seattle. Here, leaves are beginning to turn color and their unique, decaying scent is in the cool breeze. Can you feel it? Next month is Halloween! We've added a couple of new Halloween and Thanksgiving cards to our collection. We hope you think they're as delightfully creepy as we do!
Inspired by dusty rose, blush, antique gold and a little wedding nostalgia, this simple but radiant "Congrats!" greeting card was designed by our artist, Angela Driscoll. We've added a little sparkle to boot with hand-embellished gold glitter and a shimmery, metallic gold envelope! Now available in our online store!
My dad worked in the U.S. Army for over 20 years and there were many late nights and early mornings that he was away, especially in the 90's when Desert Storm was in full swing and he had to be ever-present in the office. How did he manage to always seem so cheerful and loving to us upon his arrival home from such a trying day? His continual positivity is admirable and I try to keep the same attitude because I figure that if he can be that way, then I sure as heck better be. It's helped us keep this crazy, wonderful greeting card business running amongst many other life's challenges.
We moved to so many places and made home wherever we were stationed. It was an awesome adventure. Despite the constant changes in location, schools, friends and everything else, my parent's dedication to keeping our family tight remained constant. My dad encouraged my sister and I to grab opportunities that were presented to us, keep our minds open to different cultures, to not be afraid of challenges and to see a silver lining in everything. I never once was told that I couldn't do something because I was a girl. I never even thought about it. I'm a lucky kid.
As I type this, my husband, Charlie (the second half of Driscoll Design,) is upstairs rollicking around and doing "karate chops" with my three year old, Danny. Laughter is filling the house. Danny is a lucky kid too.
Thank you to every dad. You don't get enough credit. We love you.
I had my sweet son, Danny, three years ago. I want to protect him from all pain and try to provide as much comfort and happiness to him as I humanly can. He amazes me and my heart hurts from being so full of love for him. I often think about my own mother and of all the nail-biting worry and boundless pride she had for my sister and I through out the years. How she would do anything and sacrifice anything for us. I know, because she reminds me of this a lot.
Mother's Day isn't until May 10th this year. How about sending a little love her way all year.
